“I hope you’re watching mainstream media” – actress shailene woodley arrested during peaceful pipeline protest

American-born actress Shailene Woodley was arrested on Monday for participating in a peaceful protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAP), a $3.7 billion project that intends to create a 1,172 mile pipeline spanning four states.
The arrest, which was made in Sioux County, North Dakota, involved Woodley and 26 others on charges of trespass and engaging in a riot, according to police.
Best known for her leading role in theDivergent series, the actress hoped her celebrity status would attract more attention toward this important event, and even documented the protest on Facebook live once the police were called in to handle the so-called riot.
The video spans two hours and ends with her arrest, after which Shailene followed up by saying, “I hope you’re watching, mainstream media.” (To see the full video, click HERE.)
The video has now amassed well over 3.5 million views, bringing this important matter to the masses in a raw format the mainstream media is unlikely to ever deliver.
Thankfully, several alternative media outlets have covered the pipeline project relentlessly, stressing how important it is that we put an end to it.  Below are some of the most recent pieces that we at CE have released on the matter:
Shailene has since been released from jail after posting a $500 bond. Her publicist told E! News, “She appreciates the outpouring of support, not only for her, but more importantly, for the continued fight against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.”
By having the courage to not only stand with protestors but to also broadcast their struggle live on Facebook, Shailene has effectively tapped into a pocket of the collective that was unlikely to be made aware of this issue otherwise. Her celebrity status made the arrest a tabloid the mainstream media could not resist, even though it involved an event -the pipeline protest -they otherwise have fully avoided.
This isn’t the first time that Shailene has made a public statement to support a social issue she cares about. An avid supporter of once presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, she has spoken at a number of public events to promote him.
The caravan seen at several points during the Facebook live video is the same one that Shailene and a group of fellow Bernie supporters have been travelling across the country in. Much of their progress can be followed through any of her well-known social media accounts.
Whether you agree with Shailene’s actions or not, take the time to at least inform yourself of the issues at hand. Be sure to turn to several media outlets to ensure you get the full story and to identify the way in which you would like to help out.
