This innocent man who spent 39 years in prison can teach us a lesson on attitude

When we are wronged, it is easy to become bitter and cynical. Often our anger turns into hate, which only serves to harm us more than the people who have wronged us. Learning to forgive and move on can be one of life’s toughest lessons. Ricky Jackson, a man who was released from prison in 2014 after serving 39 years for a crime he did not commit is a shining example to all of us on how to do exactly that.

Ricky Jackson’s story

Jackson was convicted of the murder of a man named Harold Franks, along with two friends, in 1975, at the age of 19. The evidence against Jackson was all based on the witness statement of a thirteen-year-old boy, on a school bus that was a block away from the scene.

The boy, Eddie Vernon, was challenged by classmates at the time, as they all claimed that it would have been impossible for him to have seen the murder from where the bus was.

There was no further evidence presented to the jury in Cleveland, Ohio, to back up the unreliable witness statement, but it was enough to see Jackson sentenced to death. Jackson and his friends only avoided execution because of a paperwork error, which opened up the opportunity for them to appeal their charges.

At an appeal hearing in 2014, Vernon finally admitted that it had in fact been impossible for him to witness the crime from his position on the bus. He went on to claim that he had been coerced into testifying against Jackson by police. The case once more highlights the flaws in the US justice system.

‘The scale of the miscarriage of justice in Ricky Jackson’s case is staggering,’ said Clive Stafford-Smith, the head of Reprieve, a London-based human rights charity. ‘Much of what went wrong in Mr. Jackson’s case is very familiar: a witness coached by the police into a version of events that would gain an easy conviction; a woeful lack of reliable evidence linking him to the crime; inept lawyering, especially for poor people; a jury or judge not willing to countenance doubt; and a ‘justice’ system where, once convicted, it becomes nearly impossible to overturn a sentence.’

Thanks to his team of lawyers, Jackson will now receive $2 million in compensation. However, no matter how high the sum of money is it can never adequately compensate for taking away nearly forty years of his life and preventing him from living a normal life.

Forgiveness

Faced with such a tragic situation, it would be understandable for Jackson to be bitter and angry. However, his attitude towards the situation encapsulates the enduring power of the human spirit.

When he was asked if he felt angry about his incarceration after his release, his answer was truly inspiring. ‘A lot of people will want me to hate that person and carry animosity towards him but I don’t,’ he said. ‘As far as that young man is concerned I don’t hate him, I just wish he has a good life… it took a lot of courage to say he lied. In the end, he came through for me and I’m grateful.’

Rather than dwelling on what had been lost, Jackson pledged to make the most of his new-found freedom and to live as wonderful a life as he could. His anger and bitterness were non-existent, he accepted the reality of his existence.

According to the respected therapist, Dr. Andrea Brandt, forgiveness teaches you to embrace your life for what it is and move forwards. ‘By forgiving, you are accepting the reality of what happened and finding a way to live in a state of resolution with it.’

This forgiveness thought process is echoed by the world-renowned spiritual author, Dr. Wayne Dyer, who saw holding onto rage as a way of polluting the human condition. ‘If you’re filled with anger, you are one more person who contributes to the pollution of anger,’ he said. ‘Instead, remember that you have no need to wrong others or to retaliate when you’ve been wronged.’

These lessons are ones that Ricky Jackson learned instinctively over his 39 years in prison. However, they can be learned by each of us if we take the time to educate ourselves spiritually. Jackson is an example of how to move on from pain and suffering, in order to maximize the short time we are given on this earth.

Why is no one talking about this massive oil spill thats polluting the gulf of mexico

A few weeks ago, a pipeline was severely damaged at a Royal Dutch Shell deepwater production field, reportedly 100 miles off the Louisiana coastline. They claim an estimated 90,000 gallons of crude oil went into the Gulf of Mexico before they were able to contain the leak.

That being said, On Wings of Care, a nonprofit environmental watchdog group that flew ECOGIG scientist Ian McDonald over the spill, estimated that the official numbers were grossly inaccurate. They noted that the oil slick covered over 5 square nautical miles, or about 5,000 acres. McDonald says:

”Even if the average thickness of the visible oil were a mere 100 micron (0.1 millimeter, vastly smaller than the areas of emulsified oil that stretch across the area), the visible surface oil would represent about 500,000 gallons of oil. We haven’t seen images like this since the BP disaster of 2010.”

Their plane had to stay above 1,000 feet to avoid what was described as a “very uncomfortable smell of oil.” Those aboard also spotted a pod of about 50 dolphins swimming near the slick.

The spill was first reported Thursday, May 12, after a Shell helicopter reported seeing an oily sheen near four subsea wells. SkyTruth, a West Virginia-based environmental watchdog group, pointed to the accidental nature of the leak’s discovery.

That’s right: a modern pipeline at a high-tech deepwater development project leaked thousands of gallons of oil, and that leak was accidentally discovered.

Not because high-tech telemetry on the pipeline signaled an alarm due to a drop in pressure; not because flow metering detected a difference between what was going in one end of the pipe vs. what was coming out the other.

How long would this leak have continued, if not for the sheer luck of having a vigilant pilot happening by?

SkyTruth also raised important questions about the slowness and inadequacy of the spill response and cleanup, as well as the federal government’s continuing approvals of drilling permit applications with inadequate spill response plans:

”Our government is indulging in a troubling fantasy that is eagerly abetted by the oil industry and pro-drilling politicians, dressing up deepwater offshore drilling as a safe operation so they can continue to rubber-stamp permit applications that contain laughable oil-spill response plans.

But as Shell just demonstrated, this emperor has no clothes. When will our government and the global oil industry wake up to this reality and get serious about oil spill response? If the BP/Deepwater Horizon spill wasn’t a disaster big and costly enough to provoke a serious overhaul, then what will it take?”

This latest spill comes amid a growing movement to halt the issuance of new offshore oil and gas drilling leases.

Though the Obama administration recently removed the Atlantic from the list of places where it was considering allowing new oil and gas leasing, the Gulf remains on that list, with up to 10 more lease sales planned over the next five years, as does the Arctic.

How long would this leak have continued, if not for the sheer luck of having a vigilant pilot happening by?

From May 3 through May 15, there were more than 20 protest actions involving some 30,000 people on six continents as part of an action called “Break Free From Fossil Fuels.” They included actions at the world’s largest coal port in Australia, a coal ash disposal site in Turkey and an oil refinery in Washington state.

The very day the Shell leak was discovered, a rally to protest new Gulf oil and gas leases was held at a U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management public hearing on leasing held in New Orleans. The agency is collecting public comments on the proposed leasing plan until June 6 and aims to finalize the plan by year’s end.

This past Sunday, more than 1,000 people gathered outside the White House and marched to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to protest offshore drilling.

Among the speakers was Monique Verdin, a resident of southern Louisiana’s St. Bernard Parish and a member of the United Houma Nation.

“When the oil tides rolled in, back in 2010, coastal communities across the Gulf witnessed the devastating gambles taken to harvest fossil fuels off our shores and in our waters.

We are on the front lines, witnessing the side effects of extreme extraction, ranging from rising sea levels to tainted waters to more violent and unpredictable weather,” Verdin said.

“That’s why we are calling on President Obama to refuse any new leases in his offshore drilling plan and protect the Alaskan Arctic and Gulf South waters, wildlife and ways of life. It is time we break free from fossil fuels and build the just transition to renewable and sustainable solutions.”

Almost no children in France are medicated for ADHD This is how they define treat it

The French do not recognize ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) rejecting the idea that medicines that are usually prescribed for the condition are at all helpful.

These two very different cultures have different ADHD levels in children, in America the rate is 19 percent, and in France, it’s .5% – a half of a percent. For that half percent, the treatment includes no chemical or medicine whatsoever, opting for older fashioned methods.

French children are subjected to much less sugar and additive-laden foods. Sugary cereals, fast food and fizzy drinks are consumed in much less volume than in the U.S, they are not shown the same advert driven television programs and lead an altogether more simple life.

In 1998, Dr. Edward C. Hamlyn of the Royal College of General Practitioners said, “ADHD is fraud intended to justify starting children on a life of drug addiction". One of the founding fathers of ADHD as a medical psychiatric disorder, Leon Eisenberg, confessed on his deathbed in 2009 at the age of 87, “ADHD is a prime example of a fictitious disease.” The evidence is overwhelming that the 'treatment' for this 'condition' is a fraud.

Cognitive therapy was traded in for drugs a long time ago. Doctors are urged to write prescriptions as the government and BigPharma are in it together.

Psychiatrists were known to give all of 15 minutes time to a patient and be writing out a prescription for pharmaceuticals. Only drastic circumstances would allow for a review of the prescription, as patients' complaints fell on the deaf ears.

This culture of giving pills away like candy resulted in children as young as three be prescribed drungs such as Ritalin (methylphenidate) and Adderall (amphetamine, dextroamphetamine mixed salts), without any other methods being tried first. There are now 5 million children in the U.S. on Ritalin or Adderall who have been resigned to either a life sentence of these drugs, or the awful process of weening themselves off them if they decide to do so.

Morgan Freeman Defends His Cannabis Use With This Epic Response!

Morgan Freeman recently did an interview with the Daily Beast to discuss the movie, 5 Flights Up. Instead, another topic took center stage — the legalization and use of marijuana.

“Never give up the ganja.”

These were the epic words of Morgan Freeman in an interview with The Guardian back in 2003. Already way back then, that the Hollywood legend proudly announced his love for the healing plant.

Now, Freeman is talking about his love of cannabis once again, which he explains he uses regularly, often times to treat his fibromyalgia and pain.

“I have fibromyalgia pain in this arm, and the only thing that offers any relief is marijuana.”

Freeman explained where his love for pot began;

“My first wife got me into it many years ago."

And then proceeds to heartily describe how he takes it;

How do I take it? However it comes! I’ll eat it, drink it, smoke it, snort it! This movement is really a long time coming, and it’s getting legs—longer legs. Now, the thrust is understanding that alcohol has no real medicinal use. Maybe if you have one drink it’ll quiet you down, but two or three and you’re fucked.”

Morgan continues by briefly exploring the benefits and down side it offers others as well;

They’re talking about kids who have grand mal seizures, and they’ve discovered that marijuana eases that down to where these children can have a life. That right there, to me, says, ‘Legalize it across the board!’”

“And what negative effects does it have?” “Look at Woodstock 1969. They said, ‘We’re not going to bother them or say anything about smoking marijuana,’ and not one problem or fight. Then look at what happened in ’99,” referencing the same annual event, which this time cracked down on marijuana use, and in turn resulted in riots and arrests.

This Car Runs For 100 Years Without Refuelling – The Thorium Car

The element in question, is called thorium. It is radioactive, and if your car was powered by t, you would literally never need to refuel it. In fact, the thorium lasts so long, t will most likely outlive you too.

This is what inspired a company named Laser Power Systems to create the concept for a thorium-powered engine that.uses thorium to build a laserbeam that heats water, produces steam, and ultimately powers an energy-producing turbine.

Thorium is so powerful, that a small sample of it packs up to 20 million times more energy than a comparatively sized sample of coal, which makes it an ideal source of energy.

Before you get too excited though, Dr. Charles Stevens, the CEO of Laser Power Systems, told Mashable in an interview that thorium engines won’t be in cars anytime soon because the automobile industry doesn't want to buy into them because they prefer to profit rather than innovate;

“Cars are not our primary interest,” Stevens said. ”The automakers don’t want to buy them.”

He said too much of the automobile industry is focused on making money off of gas engines, and it will take at least a couple decades for thorium technology to be used enough in other industries that vehicle manufacturers will begin to consider revamping the way they think about engines.

“We’re building this to power the rest of the world,” Stevens said. He believes a thorium turbine about the size of an air conditioning unit could more provide cheap power for whole restaurants, hotels, office buildings, even small towns in areas of the world without electricity. At some point, thorium could power individual homes.

Stevens understands that people may be wary of Thorium because it is radioactive — but any such worry would be unfounded.

“The radiation that we develop off of one of these things can be shielded by a single sheet off of aluminum foil,” Stevens said. ”You will get more radiation from one of those dental X-rays than this.”
